So, my friends really liked it and asked if I'd teach a class on how to do it (which is happening this Saturday, 6/4/2016, if local folks want to sign up). Apparently, they liked it, and asked me if I'd like to be a guest designer for the month of May, when they'd be featuring Alice in Wonderland items.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I've never done anything like this before, so I was a little nervous (okay, maybe a lot nervous) about whether I could come up with anything that would do justice to all the goodies they sent me to work with.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I hope that they like what I came up with. I did two projects, each using the altoid tins they sent.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I started by painting the tin a cream color, then when it was dry, used a dry brush to add a some light brown acrylic paint, then painted on a layer of DecoArt's One Step Crackle. Once that was dry, I went back with some darker brown and rubbed it into the crackled parts to make it look aged. I glued a few images to the outside of the lid, and added a couple of tiny keys for more embellishment.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">For the inside, I painted the chipboard figures and chipboard props black, then added white, gold, and glitter highlights. The background in the lid of the tin is from a scrap of some photorealistic scrapbook paper I had. I used two of the chipboard frames from this set (the mushrooms in the back, the Cheshire cat in front of that) painted black and glittered, separated by pop dots so they'd stand out more. I glued crumpled tissue paper inside the base, glued some moss over that, and then decided where to place the figures and glued them in place. On a few of the figures, I cut a toothpick in half and glued to the back and stuck that down into the moss/tissue paper to help give more stability. Finally, I dabbed some watered down glue around the moss and sprinkled glitter over the whole thing.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">For my second project, I knew I wanted to do an assemblage doll piece. I've been looking at all kinds of different dolls and figures on Pinterest lately, and I just really, really wanted to try one.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; text-align: left;">I was picturing it as a wall hanging at first, although I wasn't quite sure what I was going to do for legs, but I was talking to a friend, tossing around ideas, and started thinking about putting her on a candlestick or something so she could sit on a shelf. I wasn't quite sure exactly what I was going to do, but then I was walking through Tuesday Morning, and they had these adorable little dessert bowl type dishes -- a small bowl on a pedestal, not very tall, and I thought it would make a perfect base, resembling a skirt or dress. So I picked up one of those, and then found some Tattered Angels Plain Jane's Stained Glass paint over on the craft aisle (still at Tuesday Morning):

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I painted the inside of the bowl with two coats (the picture there shows it after one coat) and then used some Metallic Lustre on the outside to bring out the raised design and to make the edge look gold.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">For the head, I used one of the images from one of the collage sheets Alpha Stamps sent me and created a soldered square, then glued a bit of embellishment (I think it was part of an earring maybe?) in one corner. I used a bead for the neck. The wire heart was originally going to be for hanging her on a wall, until I changed direction, but it helps provide stability for the head and neck, so I just decorated it with some of the little plastic flower beads they sent me and added the "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" graphic from one of the collage sheets.

The lid side has a scrap of Graphic 45 paper for the background, and then the picture, the quote, and the top hat are cut from different collage sheets, and I used this bronze stop watch.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I punched holes in the tin to attach her arms, which are some little glass flower beads I had in my stash, wire wrapped together, ending in a bronze teacup and saucer charm on one arm, and a flat, round, bronze piece for a saucer on the other. On the bottom of the flat, round piece, I glued a magnet so it would stick to the tin, and then used some velcro, one piece on the top of that flat round piece and one piece on the bottom of the teacup and saucer charm, so that they stick together when she's closed, but can be easily moved so you can open the tin.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I finished her up by making her crepe paper skirt, highlighting some of the edges with the Metallic Lustre, and used some paper flowers from my stash to cover the edges of the crepe paper on the front, and a metal decorative piece to cover it on the back, because it was kind of messy looking. Here she is from the back:

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">So, those are the two projects I came up with. I actually have an idea for using some of the other collage sheet images they sent me, I just haven't had time to work on it yet. I really appreciate Alpha Stamps for letting me do this -- I had a lot of fun with it, despite being a bit nervous about it.

I'll work on it. For now, I thought I'd post about a class I took this past weekend at The Wild Nest. It was taught by Sandra Feazel, who does really amazing paintings. For this class, she taught us how to paint roses.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I'm actually really happy with how mine turned out:

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Sandra's example was shades of pink, but I went a different direction, color-wise. I'm not really a pink kind of girl, so I wanted to do something a little different. It always amazes me in classes how everyone's project ends up being completely different.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Anyway, as usual, I completely forgot to take pictures of everyone else's stuff. They were all great, though.
I've been doing doodle type things a lot, like these:

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I had the brilliant idea to fill in all the empty space with tiny little dots. I think it'll look neat, but it's going to take a while.

That didn't exactly happen. I did go to the store yesterday and buy stuff to cook. I bought a pack of chicken breasts I was planning to marinate and grill, but realized today that they never made it to the fridge last night, and I don't think I want to cook chicken that's been sitting out at room temperature overnight. I'll still make the veggies I was going to make, and I think I have some burger patties in the freezer and maybe some sausages, so I'll use that, but it's disappointing because the chicken just really sounded good.

Not really a lot going on here. I have a ton of stuff I need to do, and no desire to do it, but I'm sure eventually I'll get it all done.Texas Art Friend-zyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06293504461698333458noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4103316463516016102.post-65782322011869777112016-04-24T21:24:00.000-05:002016-05-18T14:15:48.335-05:00Art Journaling Class<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">This weekend, I got to hang out with art friends and make stuff and laugh and just generally have a great time.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">We went to a new place out in Colleyville, The Wild Nest. If you're in the neighborhood there, stop by and check it out -- I could have easily just wandered around looking at all the stuff on the walls for an hour or more. I'm not very good at remembering to take pictures, but a few things that caught my eye include:

Last night I stayed up too late reading The Murder of Mary Russell by Laurie R. King, the latest in her series of Mary Russell/Sherlock Holmes stories. It's been a long time since I've read a book that really pulled me in and I couldn't stop reading. I'm working on Outlander, but it just hasn't been like that for me. It's not even that I'm not enjoying it, but it's not un-put-down-able, although that may be as much about me as the book -- I've had trouble focusing on much of anything lately, and just not been in the mood to read, which is really weird for me.

Anyway, The Murder of Mary Russell. I can't say a lot about it because spoilers, just in case someone reads this who hasn't read it yet, but I did enjoy it. I'm not sure how I feel about the ending, but I'm trying to stay open minded and wait to see where it goes in the next one.

Other than that, not a lot going on here. The weather's been stormy, but at least we don't have flooding, and so far no tornadoes. My food choices have been less than stellar and I need to get back on track with that. I keep saying I'll do that, and then I get lazy and don't want to cook. That's really no excuse, I know I feel better when I eat better, it's just hard to get there when I'm this far off track.

So that's really all I have to talk about right now, I guess. I'll be back Saturday(ish), probably posting about the art journaling class I'll be taking on Saturday.

Texas Art Friend-zyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06293504461698333458noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4103316463516016102.post-7233621530141904092016-04-16T16:26:00.004-05:002016-05-18T14:24:23.652-05:00Trying to commit to blogging, again...<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">So, clearly I didn't manage the two posts a week I talked about in my last post. Oops. That's okay, I'll just try again.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Plan going forward: a post on Saturday, about crafting stuff. A post on Wednesday-ish about other stuff.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">So, today is a post about crafting stuff. I've made a bunch of paper flowers out of coffee filters dyed with watered down acrylic paint, just because I felt like it, and turned some of them into this colorful garland for my fireplace (I should have spaced those middle two flowers differently):

Bright, colorful coffee filter flowers

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">These were really simple -- I started out cutting the edges of the coffee filters into scallops to be more petal like, but then did a bunch of them without doing that, and from a distance, it doesn't make a huge difference either way. I do wish I'd darkened the edges with paint or ink for some contrast. I just stapled probably 10 filters together, then bunched up each filter individually into the middle, and then sort of fluffed them out. The garland is made up of pairs of those glued back to back with bakers twine in the middle of them. Super easy.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I carved a new stamp:

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

Heart border stamp

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Carving stamps is something I can do when I need to be at the computer, but am not actually captioning programs -- like in the time when I'm waiting for a show to start. It's easy to just stop when I need to start captioning, I don't feel like I'm losing my place or anything, I can just pick back up the next time I have a break.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">And I've been adding things to the Zazzle store I started. Zazzle is a print on demand (POD) site -- there are quite a few out there, Society6 and Cafe Press are two others you may have heard of. I uploaded some art to Zazzle and to Society6 just to see how they work, and I've already sold some things from Zazzle. It's not going to make me rich, but if it brings in a little extra money, that would be nice. It's harder than it used to be for me to get overtime at my real job, so I'd be really happy if I can find some ways to have some extra spending money, especially if I can earn it doing things I like to do and would probably do anyway, and that's basically what this is -- the types of stuff I'm uploading is stuff I would have done anyway, now I just go a bit further with it, scanning it into the computer, cleaning it up in Photoshop some, and then uploading it to Zazzle and putting it on different products. Some of the items available are:

I think I'm going to revive the blog. I know the two of you who read it are thrilled, right? I'm hoping committing to posting will help me commit to actually do stuff -- make stuff, read stuff, eat healthier stuff -- you know, actually maybe be somewhat productive, which I feel like I just haven't been lately. So, I'm aiming for posting twice a week. Anything more than that is just a bonus. I want one post to be crafting related, and the other will be -- I don't know, something else. What I'm reading, or eating, or thinking about, or if I really can't come up with anything else, a pic of the cats (kidding, mostly -- my cats tend not to do anything interesting to take pictures of).

So I'll start with what I did this past weekend. A friend of mine, Mitzi, hosted an Alice in Wonderland tea for a bunch of us. She really outdid herself on the decor and the food, the attention to detail was amazing. Here's just a couple of examples:
In addition to the great food, and lots of talking and laughing (and maybe some covert matchmaking for some people's adult children -- shh, don't tell), some of us did a swap of altered teacups with an Alice theme. I haven't really been sure what I wanted to do with my little corner of the internet here. I don't really want it to be all food all the time, but I haven't been sure what else to do with it. I do want to focus on things that make me healthy and happy, but food isn't the only part of that. I feel like this turned into Shannon's Food Log more than anything else, which isn't really what I intended it to be.

What I'd like this to be is more of Shannon's Life and Food and Crafts and Random Thoughts (and maybe some pictures of my cats). When I thought about starting this blog and what I would call it, I considered several other names before I settled on Healthy, Happy Shannon. I chose this one because it sums up what I aspire to be. All the Whole30 stuff over the last year and a half or so has been part of that, but now I think it's time to focus more on other aspects of it.

Now that I've said all that, though, I am starting another Whole30 on Monday. I don't really meal plan very well, but I have decided on some recipes I'm going to make for next week, and I've bought ingredients and started cooking some of the things that will freeze well for later in the week. My daily meals will be over on Instagram, but I thought I'd list what all I'm making for the week here.

Everything I have planned is from Well Fed and Well Fed 2. Some of them are available online, I'll link to those. For protein, I'm going with Rogan Josh (with beef instead of lamb -- already made this, and it's tasty, I put it on top of some mashed cauliflower), Meat & Spinach Muffins (I've already made these and been having them for breakfast the last few mornings. I'll probably change the seasonings up next time I make them, but they're ok, and an easy grab-and-go breakfast), Pad Thai, and Oven Fried Salmon Cakes (these freeze well, and I already had the cans of salmon in the pantry, so I'll make them and eat a few this week and freeze some for those days when I burn supper or didn't plan ahead and need to grab something quickly). For veggies, Silky Gingered Zucchini Soup, Crisp Sweet Collards (trying something new -- I've never really had collard greens as an adult, and have been told I didn't like them as a child, so I'm really hoping they're good), Belly Dance Beet Salad (but with roasted garlic instead of raw, since I made it with raw once and found that it was a bit overpowering in some bites), Cumin Roasted Carrots, Mashed Cauliflower, and El Minzah Orange Salad.

Anyway, that's what's going on here. I'll try to post regularly, though not daily, and not all food-related. And just for grins, here's a picture of one of my kitties, Cashew, supervising while I work:
I didn't post anything yesterday. I don't have any particular reason, I just didn't feel like it. I ate food -- broth and eggs for breakfast, roast chicken and sweet potato for lunch, and soup with hamburger meat for supper. Or maybe I mixed up lunch and supper there. I didn't exercise.

Boring day today, went to work, came home, did my 15 minutes of exercise (really, it was setting the timer for 15 minutes, and straightening stuff up and hauling stuff from the room it was in, to the room it was supposed to be in, not really formal exercise, but it needed to be done, so I'm counting it). I did also put some chicken in the crockpot to cook, so hopefully that'll turn out good and I'll have something more exciting for lunch than I did today.

My doctor's appointment went well. My doctor was impressed that I've lost weight in the last six months and asked what I was doing. I loaned her a copy of It Starts With Food, because I'd really like to know her thoughts on it, so I'm hoping she's really going to read it. My blood tests all came back improved from last time, although there's still room for improvement. I'll go back to her in six months or so, and hopefully they'll be even better then.

My breakfast today is not Whole30 compliant, but I made the choice to have non compliant food, and then got right back on track with lunch, mostly because I felt like the easiest way to have a hot, filling breakfast after my doctor's appointment was to go to a restaurant, rather than trying to take food with me and find a microwave to heat it up and eat in the car. Anyway, here's what I ate today:

Today was good. I feel much better than yesterday. I got in 20 minutes of exercise, walking. I cooked some. I straightened up the house some, although I'm not sure anyone else would be able to tell that I did anything. I've been hungry all day, like an hour after I ate, I was hungry. I'm not sure what's up with that.

Maybe it was the shortage of veggies at breakfast? I do usually have more than I did today. Anyway, I have a doctor's appointment in the morning, complete with blood work, for which I need to be fasting, so I'm definitely done eating for the night. Another day, more of the same. My sister challenged me to exercise at least 15 minutes every day this month, so I did get 15 minutes of walking in. I should've done more, but I started having some digestive issues, I'm not sure why, but it's left me not feeling so great. I don't know what I did differently today that made it bad, when I was fine yesterday. You'd think since I'm eating lots of veggies and meat and not a lot of anything else, my tummy would be happy, but I guess not.

Anyway, here's what I ate today (except supper. Forgot to get a picture of supper):

I guess I need to come up with better titles now that technically the Whole30 is over, huh? Oh, well, I'll worry about that tomorrow.

First up, I weighed this morning, and I lost 5.1 lbs over the last month. This makes me happy. Total, since last June, I've lost 45.7 lbs. I'm going to do pictures for the month too, but haven't yet -- I'll do it tomorrow.

I feel like since this is the last day of my Whole30, I should have something profound, or at least interesting, to write, but I've got nothing. Tomorrow, the only difference is going to be that I'll weigh myself and see how the weight loss aspect of this went, although I truly think that's only a tiny, tiny part of what eating this way can do, and I'm a lot more concerned about things like feeling better, having clearer skin (not that my skin was too horrible before, but over Christmas I had some breakouts that have now cleared up), having more energy -- things that are harder to measure, but are more important than a number on a scale.

I do go to the doctor next week, I hope to see some improvement in my cholesterol and blood sugar, but I don't really know how soon after making a change like this changes in those numbers show up, so I don't really know what to expect.

Whole30 #2 is almost over, which has led me to think about what I do on day 31. I think I'm just going to keep going for a while, although I have some things coming up in the next month that I may not be able to be 100% Whole30 for. I feel like, since I eat at home (or food I've prepared at home) most of the time, if I stay completely Whole30 compliant at home, then relaxing the rules a little when I do go out should be okay. Of course, then I have to figure out exactly what "relaxing the rules a little" means -- does it mean ordering anything I want, or does it mean ordering basically the type of food I would eat at home, but not worrying about possible added butter or sugar or soy or other things that I would avoid at home? Or is it a case-by-case thing, where occasionally I decide that a burger or enchiladas or even dessert may be worth it, but not every time? I do know that what I don't want to do is start allowing a little of something here, and a little there, and then a little more, and the next thing I know, I'm back to having Starbucks once or twice a week and candy and french fries multiple times a week. I know that doesn't work for me. I haven't done all of this to go back to that.

I guess I'll figure all of that out as I go. For now, here's what I ate today:

Today I cooked, and then cleaned the kitchen, and then cooked some more, so now I need to clean the kitchen again. I feel like this is a never-ending cycle. If I ever win the lottery, I'm hiring someone to come clean the kitchen every 12 hours, just to keep up with the dishes/mess from cooking.

A few weeks ago, I ordered myself a couple of cookbooks -- Well Fed 2 by Melissa Joulwan and Nom Nom Paleo: Food for Humans by Michelle Tam. This week's food planning was basically just looking through WF2 and trying to decide which recipes to make, which was actually really hard because all of them looked really good. So far, I've liked them all, even though I didn't let the coleslaw sit for at least an hour as recommended. It was still good, and I'm sure it'll be even better as leftovers tomorrow. In a week or two, I'll do the same with the Nom Nom Paleo book, but since not every recipe in it is Whole30 compliant, I thought I'd wait, so if I want to try one that isn't, I can. Did that last sentence make sense? I hope so. Anyway, it's almost midnight, I think I'm going to go to sleep now.

Yesterday at supper, I had a baked sweet potato with cinnamon and coconut oil and a couple of Aidell's chicken & apple sausage.

Today, I slept too late to have breakfast. Dad picked the restaurant he wanted to go to for his birthday and chose Tachitos, a Mexican food restaurant that we've been going to for years, and where I'd normally order enchiladas or cheese tacos, which are totally not Whole30. I opted for fajitas, didn't eat the tortillas or beans, so basically I had chicken with grilled onions, bell peppers, and tomatoes, and some avocado. For supper, we went to another restaurant, 342 Grill, where I had a ribeye steak, I specified no butter finish, grilled zucchini and squash, and a salad with just some lime to squeeze over it instead of dressing.

Anyway, tomorrow I'll go grocery shopping and cook for the week, I've planned out a menu, sort of, to the extent that I plan anything. Now I've got to go finish cleaning up the kitchen so I'll be ready to cook tomorrow.

Over the weekend, I went to visit my sister and her family. She's also doing a Whole30, so I had no problems sticking to the plan. I did have one meal (not at her house) where I made the best choices I could, but suspect there was dairy in something that I ate -- it was scrambled eggs, and they tasted buttery. Other than that, I had some really good meals. She made fauxtmeal, something I never make for myself, but which always looks yummy in her pictures, so I told her I wanted to try it. I didn't get the exact recipe from her, but from what she said, I think it was like this banana and egg based one maybe. It was really good. We went out to eat one night at Texas Roadhouse -- I had a New York Strip steak, baked sweet potato, and salad, no butter on anything, no cheese on the salad, just lemon for salad dressing. I didn't take pictures of any of it, I just enjoyed my time visiting, not dragging the phone to the table with me.
